Wind power basically refers to the process of converting wind energy into utilizable form of energy. A wind turbine is the most common device in making electricity from wind. Windmills are also used for creating mechan
Technically called “the windustry”, the companies are divided into two categories: commercial and small. The first pertains to the companies that deal with utility-scale turbines of 100kW. These turbines are generally connected to an electricity grid system. The second refers to the companies that handle less than 100kW turbines. These turbines can be employed on- or off-grid systems. So if you are located in a Small Island Developing States (SIDS), you may choose the latter. Nevertheless, this depends on availability. A favorable site must have an adequate wind capacity.
Going back, these two categories are further subdivided into different components. Commercial energy companies can be consultants and/or developers. Commercial energy companies may also provide financial and legal services. Turbine manufacturers, equipment suppliers and installers are also under this umbrella term commercial. These last three roles may be also included in the small energy companies.
No matter which type of provider you are looking for, you may find a wind power company in the US, Canada, Africa, Central and South America, Asia and Middle East, Europe and Australia. In terms of megawatts installed, Denmark, United States and Spain are the three countries leading the installation. In summary, if you are looking for a wind power provider, you have to determine the utility prior to commissioning a provider. There are commercial scale wind power providers and there are also small-scale providers.
Water demand is increasing especially in most urban cities worldwide compared to the rural areas where the demand is less than 50% that of the urban areas. With the scale of urbanization today, it is not
How can we use the rainwater?
You have to determine its intended use. Will it be for large or intermittent usage? Different uses of rainwater will definitely entail different equipment and processes. For example, rainwater can be used as potable source of water though it requires filtration to purify the rainwater, making it safe for drinking. As such, the objective is to conserve water and to lessen the dependence on commercial water available in the process. Basically, it will not hurt any consumer since rainwater is free and you can control the amount of rainwater you want to save.
How to set up a rainwater system?
There are three major processes required in setting up the rainwater harvesting system. These are collecting, storing and distributing. There are multiple ways of collecting rainwater. If it is for intermittent use, you may need a basin, tank or drum which you can store outside just beneath the downpipe. A more sophisticated method of collecting rainwater is through a coordinated network of gutters and downpipes which will serve as the catchment area. With this network, the rainwater will be led to a central basin connected to a pump which was then connected to a tank. In between these components, filters should be affixed so that it the rainwater reaches the tank it is already clean.
For storing, it would be best to store the rainwater underground. A water pump is optional depending on how deep into ground the central basin will be. The central basin should be made of concrete yet with a relief point so that when rainwater reaches a specific level it will be released to flow freely into the soil. A valve with a filter, however, must guard the hole so that soil will not enter the central basin. As such, the type and, of course, the quality of basin, pipes and filters must be carefully considered so that you may use the rainwater harvesting system satisfactorily and for long-term.
A simple distribution network may be required in distributing the rainwater, depending on the needs of the household. The network of water pipes should lead to where water is mostly used like the kitchen, bathrooms, garage and laundry area.
In sum, rain is a vital source of free water. In order to maximize the potential of rainwater, people should realize the utility of rainwater. This is more so because we do not know when a water shortage will happen. It is best to be ready this disaster strikes by conserving the rainwater, and of course, using a rainwater harvesting system.
The world has seen Haiti in its most challenged state in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. Aside from the lives of thousands, the tragedy also took away the livelihood of a majority of the people in Haiti. Many citizens lost their jobs and homes and were forced to start from scratch. People lost access to basic amenities like clean water and electricity. Some even began to experience hunger and poverty. While these unfortunate incidents devastated the nation, its people did not lose hope. Over the months, the citizens got up on their feet and began rebuilding their country. In fact, the company began to explore its other alternative energy sources and to employ innovations. In the recent months, one of the most talked about innovations in the nation involves the use of the wind power resources available in Haiti.
Wind power is one of the cheapest and most effective sources of alternative energy. The geography of an area affects it viability to accommodate wind turbines since strong wind usually soar in vast lands. And the location and topography of Haiti appears to be promising sites for these new power sources.
The idea of using the wind power resources available in Haiti as energy sources is inspired by the recent developments in a small island in Northwest Africa known as El Hierro. El Hierro is a Spanish nation that now takes pride as the first 100% renewable resource-dependent island in the world. These renewable forms of energy are brought about by the wind and pumped- storage hydro systems built in the country . This project may seem as an elusive dream but considering the similarities between the two nations, the project is beyond possible.
El Hierro’s first consideration in the implementation of the project is to break free from the use of fossil fuels. As time goes on and fossil fuels continue to deplete, the prices of oil and petroleum products are seen to soar. This phenomenon will further pose problems to the people of Haiti since prices of commodities will eventually go up. Having people to shift to alternative sources will make the economy more progressive and the family budget able to buy more. This is just one of the several advantages of wind power.
Aside from the wind power resources available in Haiti, the water resources will also be cheaper and more useful for the people. In El Hierro, the hydro system desalinates the water making it fit for drinking and everyday use. Water is scarce in Haiti , more so potable water, so the conversion of the water into useful and even potable forms will surely make people healthier and more productive. The agriculture sector will especially benefit from this project since irrigation will surely be improved.
The wind power resources available in Haiti together with its water and solar resources pose huge opportunities for the nation to capitalize on for re-building and growth. With proper governance and dedication, Haiti is not far from the independence and sustainability attained by El Hierro. Moreover, it is not far from converting its potential into mediums of progress and development.
